Ha Giang – An expedition following local paths

Ha Giang – sometimes known as ‘the Roof of Vietnam’ is characterized by its beautiful limestone karsts, rolling hills and highlands. It’s the homeland of many minority groups and hill tribes such as Tay, Nung, Dzao, Lolo… and H’mong.

This road trip to Dong Van Geopark has been crafted with local insights to bring you an array of colorful ethnic minority communities by staying in local villages and visiting lively ethnic markets while traveling through dramatic mountains and forest landscapes.

Meal: breakfast, lunch, dinner | Accommodation: Homestay in Nam Dam 7:30. Our guide will pick you up from the hotel and you will start the day by a drive to Ha Thanh village. There you will meet a Tay ethnic community, learn about their customs and lifestyle. You will then follow a small road leading to a group of 3 villages of Dzao people: Na Thac, Khuoi My and Lung Vai to visit mossy houses and sprawling terraced fields of the Dzao ethnic here.

After lunch at a local restaurant in Ha Giang, we will drive through Quan Ba heaven gate and Co Tien duo mountain and reach Nam Dam community-based tourism village. Check in your homestay, then go for a pleasant walk around the village. There you will visit a small museum of the village and hear the story about how to build rammed earth houses. Come back to homestay and if you want, join your host family to prepare the dinner from local ingredients. Overnight at Nam Dam homestay. 
Meal: breakfast, lunch, dinner | Accommodation: Hotel in Dong Van An exciting day to discover and “check-in” iconic spots of Ha Giang ;) After breakfast at homestay, you continue the journey in the direction of Pho Cao on the way you will check in at Lao Va Chai heaven gate and Tham Ma pass. Lunch at a local restaurant in Pho Cao.

In the afternoon, you will drive to Chin Khoanh Pass and have a break there to admire the breathtaking scenery from this famous pass (this is also an ideal place for some photo shooting ;) ) After that, you will visit the cultural village Lũng Cẩm and H’mong king’s house. This is an opportunity to learn about the architecture, history and culture of the H’mong people who have lived on the rocky plateau for centuries.  If time permits, the guide will drive you up to Lung Cu flag tower, the Northern point of Vietnam. This is a meaningful place to Vietnamese people who want to learn about the building process of the towels as well as the history of the process of preserving every inch of borderland of ethnic minorities there. Arriving in Dong Van town at around 5PM. Check-in your hotel and overnight at the hotel.
Meal: breakfast, lunch, dinner | Accommodation: Homestay in Du Gia On the second day on rocky land, you will have breakfast at your homestay then follow the Yen Minh direction to Du Gia, a remote commune of Ha Giang. On the way you will pass the Ma Pi Leng which is one of four greatest passes of Vietnam connecting two highest districts of the province: Dong Van and Meo Vac. Ma Pi Peng Peak is also the most remarkable viewpoint of Vietnam where you will have a covered and breathtaking view of Tu San abyss, Nho Que River and Happiness Road.

After a short break at Ma Pi Leng peak, you will drive down and take a boat trip on Nho Que River through Tu San Canyon. The second wow of the day! It will be a memorable experience as Tu San is considered the deepest canyon in Southeast Asia and is located in a valley with unique geological tectonics in Vietnam.

Lunch at a local restaurant in Meo Vac then continue today's journey to Du Gia. Arriving in Du Gia in the afternoon, check in your homestay and enjoy a dinner with local specialties of Tay people. Overnight at homestay. 
Meal: breakfast, lunch | Accommodation: not included If this day is on the weekend, you will visit Du Gia or Lung Ho weekend market, this is one of the few authentic ethnic markets dating back hundreds of years of H’mong people. (Du Gia market turns into a love market on the 15th of March on the lunar calendar, this is a unique market which is held once per year. On this occasion, Black H’mong who live around gather all together in this market to meet back their lovers).

In Lung Tam, the village which is well known for its long-standing traditional craft of brocade weaving, you will learn about hemp weaving culture which has been passed from generation to generation and experience 14 stages to create hemp cloth for H'mong people.

After having lunch in Quan Ba, we will drive back to Ha Giang and hop on a bus to come back to Hanoi.
